Guitar Hero: "Throbbing Callouses"
Posted: Wednesday April 19th, 2006 by

So, I did a comic about Guitar Hero a while back suggesting that would be the perfect occassion for strategic sock stuffing. Well, I didn't have the game at the time. But, I did pick it up this weekend. Well, yesterday afternoon I gave it a go.

The game is great. Every song I "played" was recognizable. And the progression of more challenging songs was logical and appropriate. I only played on easy as I'm simply not gifted when it comes to true rythm. And don't doubt, this game is more about rythm than it is about playing a guitar.

But, the easy setting is why my thumb and first three fingers are so freakin sore. You only use the first three buttons on the neck of the guitar. You don't make use of your pinky. Here I guess is where experience with a real guitar comes in. If you already have callouses, you likely won't have sore finger syndrom. And, you'll already be accustomed to using your pinky. I'm not. Evolution is slowly getting rid of our pinkys because we don't need them anymore. And my pinkies seem to want to skip a few hundred thousand years and go ahead and atrophe.

With time, I'm sure I'll get the hang of it.

At any rate, the game really is worth the purchase, I know I'll get $80 worth of fun out of that plastic guitar before I get too caught up in the game and smash the guitar into pieces at the end of a killer set.

By the way, Red Octane is already working on the sequel. It will work with the existing guitar and add a good 55 songs to the set list. Candy!
