Gaming News: "A Matter of Priority"
Posted: Wednesday November 28th, 2007 by

Back in June the British Board of Film Classification (BBFC), also responsible for rating video games, denied classification of Manhunt 2, effectively banning the game in the Britain. After a series of revisions and appeals, Rockstar Games officially asked that the Videa Appeals Committee lift the ban on the game. Arguments were heard on the 26th. Though a verdict was expected to be rendered "shortly", GU has not yet found info regarding the outcome if a decision has been made.

I don't have any problems with Manchester United soccer. And, I certainly don't advocate their being hunted down. But even me, a guy who doesn't really follow soccer, knows of the team and the hooligans fans that support them.

In regards to the case, only two games have been banned in Britain, Manhunt 2 and... Carmageddon. Carmageddon? **raises an eyebrow** Anyway, the Carmaggedon ban was overturned on appeal. With the changes that have made to the game and a Queen's Counsel representative that seems to have no qualms about questioning the boards ability to rate games (and telling them the initial ruling was "completely ignorant"), Rockstar hopes their ban will be overturned as well.

From my end, I'm apathetic to Rockstar's plight. It seems to me that they create games specifically to cause controversy and use the resultant "outcry" to promote their products. Don't get me wrong, I think banning a game is stupid. My position is one of properly rating games and merchants using those ratings to restrict who gets their hands on them. But, that's just me.
