Gaming News: "Pissing Contest"
Posted: Wednesday September 29th, 2010 by

The verbal sparring match between Activision and EA has been going on for a while. And where I'm tired of their little pissing contest, I can't help but poke at both of them for their childish behavior. I'd really prefer not to take sides because it's stupid and makes them both look like jackasses. But when I read Kotick's comments my brain says "bullshit". Where as Brown's comments seem to ring very true.

Here's the break down:
In an interview with Edge Magazine Kotick blasted EA saying the company held no respect for the culture of the studios they work with or purchase, that great people don't really want to work there implying that one might consider working for EA if they had no other options, that the company's stock options have no value, that the company had lost it's way, etc. [more info]

Jeff Brown's response was to say bluntly "Kotick's relationship with studio talent is well-documented in litigation". He went on say that Kotick's company is based on three franchises: one that's fantastic but that Kotick had nothing to do with (World of Warcraft), one that is in steep decline (Guitar Hero), and one that Kotick is destroying with his "own hubris" (Call of Duty). [more info]

As I've said before Kotick's job is to make money for his shareholders. He seems to care about the money not the games/gamers. But, that's okay. That's his purpose within the company. What I don't understand is why he hasn't figured out that keeping his mouth shut is the better policy. I honestly think the man needs a handler through which all of his comments are filtered. That handler could probably get across Kotick's point without making the man appear to be a giant doucheface. **shrugs** Just a thought.
