Skullgirls: "Seriously?"
Posted: Tuesday December 13th, 2011 by

So Skullgirls is an old-school style fighter featuring girls in skimpy clothes and the occasional panty flash. But I think the lead designer, Peter Bartholow, is doing the game no service by denying what it is. I tend to be tough on games that blatantly objectify women, and with their massive boobs, micro waists, and wide hips, Skullgirls certainly does that. But, I'll admit I wasn't offended. Well... I wasn't offended until Bartholow said "Our lead animator is a woman. She intentionally lavishes attention on the breasts herself because she thinks it's cool."

What does that matter? Pointing out that the lead designer is a woman actually came off as MORE sexist to me than a obvious anime fighting homage which doesn't apologize for featuring female characters with insane anatomical proportions.

Bartholow also accuses those calling the game sexist of displaying "misplaced and shallow chivalry". I can't say I agree there either. If I took this game more seriously I'd probably get all male-feminist on them too. But that's the thing, I can't find any room at all to take this game serious enough to be offended or find anything about it sexist. But that's just me.

Your thoughts?
