Maurice Sendak, author of the much beloved "children's" book 'Where The Wild Things Are', passed away this morning at the age of 83. [more info] 'Where the Wild Things Are' is one of those books that helped defined me. It's why I still have this dream of writing a children's book of my own. Someday Maurice. Some day.
I feel almost guilty drawing myself into Sendak's masterwork. But it's as meaningful a gesture as I can really make. I will admit this book meant something else to me growing up. This was a personal testament to growing up feeling alone. Sure I understood what the book meant, but we all filter these things through our own experiences. So the take away was always, rely on yourself for the answer.
