Reddit: "Mod Revolt"

Reddit is, to me, is the Mos Eisley of popular social media. A "wretched hive of scum and villainy". Okay, that's heavy handed and not entirely accurate. Parts of it are. Some people that troll is are deserving of that descriptor. But, not all of it. I've just not have great experiences there. One of the things I did like however were the AMAs. So I wrinkled my nose when I'd heard that Reddit had fired Victoria Taylor, the coordinator responsible for making AMAs what they were. As you can expect out of Chalmun's Cantina, the backlash was swift and abundant. Moderators flipped their popular sub reddits to "private" in protest. But, it was about for more than this one firing. It was about systemic disrespect of the volunteer moderators by Reddit Admins. [more info]
As a content creator, and community manager, I know what it means to feel disrespected by companies that rely on you, in part, to relate their message to the masses. These companies, because it is their product, quickly trip over the line of tactical couth revealing their entitled underbelly. Feeling disrespected by the very company (companies) you're working so hard to promote coats you in this palpable helplessness. So, I fully understand where the Redditor moderators were coming from and applaud their gumption.
As of the time of this writeup, most of the subreddits have returned. And, despite over 16000 people clamoring for her resignation, Ellen Pao, Reddit's CEO, has promised that change is coming. For the sake of the hardworking volunteer moderators, let's hope that's the case.
