Parallel Phases - GU's Interview with PriestMLH ( Last Updated: October 10th, 2008 )
Late Tuesday night Mads (my guest comic guru) sent me an email linking me to a video of a guy beating Dragonforce's "Through the Fire and Flames" on expert. I was impressed. But a comment in response mentioned another Guitar Hero that had more than doubled the guys score by 95%-ing the track. I was floored.

I wouldn't say that I'm easily impressed by feats of super-human Guitar Hero skill. The truth is that I understand that many people are just naturally better at playing the game than I will ever be. These people get a nod of respect. PriestMLH actually got my attention.

I contacted him, let him know that I intended to do this comic based on his video and asked him a few questions in the process:

What's the most challenging GH song you've encountered?
Well Jordan gave me the most trouble at first, it's just kind of a pain for some to pass since it has a lengthy solo, Through the Fire and Flames is pretty tough as well, but if you can get past the intro then it's a piece of cake

Do you memorize the songs, or are you just processing the note progressions on a near in-human level?
I rarely ever memorize anything, it personally takes a lot of work for me...the only time I ever did any kind of memorizing was for performance points at the World Series of Video Games, I know some people are just ridiculous at memorizing though.

Are you a speed metal guitarist when you're away from the screen? Or do you stick to the 5-button plastic love?
I'm just a beginner on real guitar, I'm not progressing as fast as I did with GH =P. Although, even though I can't play real guitar, I have tons of respect for people that can, I think it's an extremely difficult instrument, I've dabbled in almost every instrument except stringed ones, it just takes so much more coordination to be able to play well.

Have you tried out some of the other GH guitar models? Stick to one in particular? If you've tried out a bunch, which one has the best action for your style?
How many, if any, have you destroyed from overuse? So far I think I've played every model of GH model that has come out except for the new PS2 Kramer. Personally I still think the PS2 Red Gibson SG is the best guitar, although the new Les Paul for the 360 isn't bad. I actually still have the original guitars from all the games I own (Black/Red SG's, X-plorer, Les Paul). I haven't had to replace anything, just do a little maintenance on some broken parts that came about from either poor controller design, or aggressive violence on my part.

Did your fingers actually move into a parallel phase of existance on Through the Fire and Flames (Expert)? You 100% that one yet? What are the chances?
dunno about a parallel phase haha, but I've gotten a lot of comments about my finger speed, people talked me into playing real guitar. As for Through the Fire and Flames getting 100%'ed...never happening...I know people will put time and effort towards this, and they'll put up monster scores...but someone could spend a year straight on this, sell their kidney to the black market to skip work and pay for rent and they still wouldn't do it.

Honestly, after thrashing Six on expert, can you play an easy song?
I actually prefer playing easier songs, I definitely enjoy the earlier playlist in GH2/GH3...I like to just play some relaxing songs and enjoy the music, Carry on Wayward Son, When You Were Young, etc...

Is there someone you play GH with that can match you to 100% songs in Co-Op?
Actually my roommate Alex (ace886 in my videos), is a very good player, and we've recorded several 100%'s in co-op. He's just a step below the higher ranked players because he actually sets his priorities in life and doesn't play too often, but he could if he wanted to.

Have you battled someone that consistantly squeeaks out wins past you?
My rival/good-friend David Briers, aka wuLFe79 of GH2 360 fame. We live in the same state, so we try to see each other as often as we can to play some GH, but whenever it comes to playing each other, he usually wins. I'm a hardcore HyperSpeed user, have been since the code was released on GH2, David however, is a purist gamer and plays on normal speed which gives him a huge advantage when we play against each other...I'll get him one of these days though.

Have you drawn any attention from RedOctane, Neversoft, Harmonix, etc. yet?
I speak to some of the Neversoft crew on occasion, haven't really heard anything from RO or Harmonix, doubt I will...but it's just GH. I am professionally signed to Team Pandemic in their GH squad and compete on their behalf at major tournaments alongside other GH gurus - Kov, TipperQueen, Sephi, KingofTerrors.

What is your favorite GH song? (for whatever reason)
That's a toughy...probably too tough to answer haha.
