Gaming News: "Revolutionary Controller"
Posted: Wednesday August 24th, 2005 by

There's been so much hype about the Revolution's controller, that Nintendo better come up with something truly spectacular or they're going to be lynched by eager fans.

Up to this point though, all that's really been said, by the myriad of people that have actually seen/used it, is that we shouldn't underestimate Nintendo, and that the controller is going to "change the way we play video games".

Me? I'm skeptical.

The educated guess right now is that the Revolution's controller will have gyroscopic spinning doodads that will create tagible resistance while you're holding the controller. Think about it this way... if you hold a bicycle wheel by it's axle while the tire is spinning really fast, and try to tilt the wheel to one side, the wheel resists you. It wants to keep doing what it's doing. So, you can feel the force of the spinning wheel trying to move itself back to its original position.

In my mind that is no more likely to change the way I play video games than controllers with built in rumble packs did. **shrugs** An article I was reading, that has since disappeared, suggests that to accomplish this gyroscopic feedback, the controllers will likely make use of devices very much like the ones used to create rumble packs in the first place.

Who knows? I guess we'll find out when the damn things hit the shelves. And, I got five bucks that says the new controller doesn't change the way I play games in the least... which is a good thing, I'm old; I'm not bendable enough to get my leg behind my head anymore.
