With a nod to Kelis. ( March 9th, 2010 )
It's difficult, but I try to make sure I play Free Realms (or another game) for at least 30 minutes on nights before a comic. The idea is to keep me in game whether I intend to do a gaming news comic or not. Well I was inclined to try to hit blacksmithing level 10 so I could get the quest off my list and started looking over the patterns I had. I trudged my way through a level before I was so eye-crossingly annoyed with having to constantly smelt ore, buy supplies, etc. that I logged out and that was that.

The next day I googled FR Blacksmithing to see if there were any tips on what I could do to ease the process some and found a post by someone asking what the best pattern was for leveling. At the very end of the thread someone illuminated that they'd never wasted time or money on patterns, they just used the game's Activity Guide to do Forging and burned through levels that way.

I smacked my forehead. I hadn't even thought of that. Hell, I hadn't even considered the Activity Guide as a way to generate stars. I thought it was a way to generate coins. Shows what I know huh? Well, last night I finally hit Blacksmithing 20. And I took a moment to consider how long it would have taken if I hadn't found that little piece of Activity Guide advice. From that came the idea behind the comic.

So be honest...
What's the hardest thing in game you've done before finding out there was a much easier way?

NON-GU Job Opportunity ( February 18th, 2010 )
I mentioned recently that I was applying for a job as a PHP/MySQL developer. I didn't have the needed skillset. I've been doing PHP/MySQL dev on GU for years now. But what they needed was more complex than what I've been doing. Put simply, they needed someone that could jump straight in; and, unfortunately, I couldn't. But because word of the job came to me by way of a mutual acquaintance, I offered to mention the job here in the hopes that one of you might be able to help.

Here's the little blurb they sent along.
Exciting Internet startup building applications for high school coaches, athletes and fans is looking for a PHP/MYSQL/ web developer to augment their team. 20-40 hours per week (telecommuting ok), 2-3 years experience developing PHP APPLICATIONS with javascript libraries, model view controllers, and a passing relationship with versioning software

See Varvee.com for more company information and links to their media partner’s sports content. If you are interested send your resume to jobs@varvee.com with a brief email describing your interest. No third parties please.

I'd like to add a few things and clarify a few others here. They need someone with a strong understanding of complex database insertion, manipulation, and searching routines. They also need someone with experience in using javascript libraries. MVCs and versioning software isn't as critical. But they're a company looking to expand. So, MVCs and versioning software will be crucial moving forward.

In the long term they're looking for someone that lives relatively close (Denver Metro Area). But, for now they're willing to work with a telecommuter with the coding chops to move them forward.
