Doctors Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, co-founders of Bioware, announced yesterday that they would each be retiring from game development. [more info] It's interesting to note that this announcement falls so closely to the 5 year anniversary of when EA first moved to purchase Bioware/Pandemic.
It's also worth noting that neither Muzyka or Zeschuk truly commit to not returning to the game industry. I don't think one could be faulted for thinking that we'll see the two involved in the industry again. But there are quite a few responders to this news that say "Oh we'll see them on Kickstarter in 12 months". I doubt this. Unless I miss my guess, this "retirement" comes with a non-compete clause in the contract that outlines their respective severance packages.
I wish Ray and Greg all the best despite my concerns over what this could mean for Bioware.
