Gaming News: "Planning for the Future"
Posted: Wednesday May 6th, 2015 by

Last week I mentioned Konami choosing to delist itself from the US Stock Market. Because of the amount of money it saves the company, this is a perfectly valid move, especially considering Konami stock can still be traded in other markets. But on top of the delisting, Metal Gear gaming legend Hideo Kojima left the company. At the time he was working on Silent Hills with Guillermo del Toro featuring the voice and likeness of Walking Dead's Daryl Dixon, Norman Reedus.

August of last year Konami released a demo teaser for Silent Hills on the PS4 called P.T.. With Silent Hills' cancellation, Konami ceased distribution of P.T.. But, if you'd previously downloaded the demo and deleted it, it was still available for re-download. That is no longer the case. [more info] And, I think it's a real misstep. I get the point. The main game is cancelled, scratch the teaser as well. Well, that's fine; halt distribution so there are no new downloads. It just feels... not very customer-friendly.

I'm not sure what the story with the cancellation is. Surely Hideo Kojima's participation wasn't required to finish and release a Silent Hill game. So it must be about money. But history has shown that game studios that halt production of a much anticipated game, in an effort to save money, have driven themselves to ruin as they no longer have anything to offer their fans. It's a dangerous move. Though it seems improbable, I'm left wondering if Konami is intentionally sinking the studio.
