"How do you handle wrong numbers?"

Comic Type: Gaming News | Posted: Friday June 15th, 2007 by Woody - [ Size: 600x450 ]
In my profession we run into all kinds of goofy phone calls. One of them that has been bugging me lately is how people handle themselves when we reach a wrong number.

Many of the people are polite and handle the call (relatively) professionally themselves. Them, "Sorry, you have a wrong number", me, "Was it 555-5515 that I called", them, "Yes, but that person is not at this number", me, "thanks for your time and sorry for the inconvenience".

Others have been completely horrible. Asking me how I got the number who I am calling for and why. Some get angry because we won't tell them why. I still don't quite understand where they get off...

Most of the calls, though, end in the person on the other line abruptly hanging up.

I personally handle wrong numbers in the first fashion. I have never understood why someone would be rude to a wrong number unless they're rude first. Now that I work in the profession I do, and knowing how sick people can be in general, I would not dare be rude to the possible psycho on the other end because if they have your number, they most likely know more about you than you'd like them to. And oh yes, I've thought about it myself.

I've also never quite understood the point of hanging up. If that's done, chances are the place has to call back to confirm the number anways, so why waste my own time (not to mention theirs) by being an ass like that?

This brings me to the question of the thread. How do YOU handle wrong numbers?
