Gaming News: "New Concepts"
Posted: Monday July 21st, 2008 by

As E3 wrapped up this year, it seems reporters eager for new items they didn't get from the event itself, turned to big name attendees for their opinion of the event. Among the more negative views of the current format [more info] was the more impartial comments of Nintendo's living legend, Shigeru Miyamoto. In an interview with GameIndustry.Biz Miyamoto-san explained that E3 was no longer the right place to reveal/spotlight "classic franchises and fan-favorites". Rather, it is the kind of event that provides "an opportunity for [Nintendo] to introduce new concepts and new types of play".

The cited article leads off with the illumination that "loyal fans" were disappointed that Nintendo used this E3 to showcase upcoming music and sports titles rather than the tried and true Mario and Zelda franchises. This flows perfectly into Miyamoto-san's comments. But if Nintendo's game design history tells us anything, it tells us that, even in introducing new concepts, we should pretty much expect the expected.

Let me be honest here though, I don't care if Nintendo offers me the expected. As long as they keep making games I enjoy, I'm perfectly fine with the expected.
