The Zapper!: "Net Neutrality"
Posted: Wednesday April 7th, 2010 by

In 2007 Comcast was accused of blocking/throttling BitTorrent broadband traffic. This lead to the whole "net neutrality" uproar. For those of you not clear on the situation or what it means for gamers, some broadband clients were being targeted by Comcast because they tend to use more bandwidth than the average client who typically only uses the internet for email and casual web browsing. Being that we gamers like to play games online, watch games trailers, and download expansion files and purchase DLC, we're high on Comcast's "don't want" list. Given the ability to discriminate, Comcast could easily slap additional charges on certain users based purely on their own criteria.

The FCC have been combating that, but Yesterday three federal judges sided with Comcast saying the FCC "lacks authority to require broadband providers to give equal treatment to all Internet traffic flowing over their networks" [more info] basically squashing Net Neutrality flat.

Now I've always been clear in my position on Comcast. But just in case you missed it, I hate 'em. Unfortunately, I don't like DSL connectivity, and Comcast is the only cable provider in our area. So I have to deal with them. And for those of you that work at Comcast that typically email or PM me when I go on a Comcast rant asking what you can do to help... nothing. I appreciate your individual efforts; you're awesome. But, you can't make up for the rest of the company.
