Poopy Strip: "Gamer Angst"
Posted: Thursday January 6th, 2011 by

Let me start by making a request: no unsolicited advice.
That doesn't mean I don't want you to participate in the conversation it just means, if you've had the following issue and resolved it post your story and the steps you too to resolve it. If you're a tech savvy person who thinks they might have a solution, just post the information as an example. Thanks for understanding!

Yesterday I decided I wanted to get the "To All the Squirrels Who Cared for Me" Achievement where you run around an "/love" various critters running around Cataclysm zones. I made a list of what was where so I didn't have to keep running back and forth between zones. In the end I came to the baradin fox kit and the sassy cat both of which are located in Tol Barad (Peninsula). The problem was in all my Cataclysm journeys I hadn't run into an entrance like you have for Warsong Gulch, Arathi Basin, etc. And I hadn't flown over anything like Wintergrasp.

Well none of my chat buddies were online, and there was no way I was asking the douchefaces in Trade or General. So I started doing some google searches. I went all over the place and couldn't find a straight answer. At some point during my journeys I hit a malicious site that dropped "Memory Fixer" on my computer. I started working to clear the persistent bastard off my machine.

A while later, with a clean bill of health from Malwarebytes, Spybot, and my registry scanner, I decided to log back into the game. As soon as I tried to log in I got an Error #132 Fatal Exception. I immediately went into annoyed mode and started searching for the answers. I tried every suggestion I found: deleted the cache, add-ons (which I don't use anymore), and WTF folders; "reapair"ed the game; reinstalled the game; updated my video card drivers; turned my in-game video settings all the way down; checked my registry again. But still every time I try to log in SPLAT. Now the reason has changed. It's not always the same error. But most of the time it's "memory can not be 'read'".

I'm on the verge of doing the unthinkable. I'm about to post to the WoW Forums. GASP!

No seriously, I know the tech support forum isn't as trolly as the rest of that place. But it still represents me breaking a vow I made a long time ago to never post on the WoW forums for any reason. Anywho... I'll keep you guys posted.

"So what's the moral of the story?" you might ask.
Don't /love critters. You might end up with a virus.

--- UPDATE ---

In the end I decided to just low level the hard drive and restore from my Ghosted C. So after two days (kinda) of "problem solving" the WoW issue, I resolved the issue in about an hour and a half: around half an hour to low level and repartition my hard drive, just over a half an hour to reinstall XP Pro, and just under a half an hour to run Norton Ghost over the top of the clean build. WoW is up and running again.
