There have been issues with app clones and knock-offs on the Apple App store for a while now. Earlier this month they removed 59 titles submitted by the same user, all clones of existing apps. And yesterday a fake Pokemon app called "Pokemon Yellow" was one of the top selling apps on iTunes. [more info]
The app in question crashed immediately after main screen. So it really was just an evil money grab by an asshat that also posting similar rip-off apps for Digimon and YuGiOh+. Apple has since removed all three. But a question about oversight still lingers. Unfortunately, I don't know if it's a question that's easily answered.
There are well over half a million apps in the App Store with more being added every day. With a system that's fairly wide open in terms of who can submit what it's virtually impossible for Apple to be on top of/review every submission before they go live in the store. And with the community lust for more more more how could Apple justify a slow trickle?
So the point we take away from this is, be careful what you spend your money on.
