Previously, in the Curse of Strahd...
A young girl had been bundled up and thrown overboard a fishing boat into the murky waters of Lake Zarovich. Hollywood, our resident Warlock, clam digging at the water's edge, dove in after her. Burning through his -and nearly everyone else's- inspiration trying to make the requisite checks, he was forced to relinquish his staff to the lake's depths in order to take hold of her and pull her to shore. He replaced his lost weapon soon enough, but it was a simple, nondescript affair. Since then he's been looking for something better.
Now, in defense of my snark, I introduced the nickel staff assuming Hollywood would catch my meaning. Given my delivery, he took it as an actual item. Luckily, Seamus was there to pick up what I was putting down, offering up some math snark of his own.
Crap staves are now universally referred to as nickel staffs.
