Gaming News: "Who's the Bully?"
Posted: Monday August 8th, 2005 by

August 2nd a Washing DC-based youth group named, of all things, Peaceoholics, marched to, then proceeded to protest outside of, Rockstar Games' Manhattan Offices. They carried signs that read "Put the cuff on Rockstar, not youth" and "Prosecute Rockstar Games; they are felons", while chanting "Hey hey, ho ho, Rockstar Games has got to go". A group called the Peaceoholics chanting and protesting to try to force Rockstar Games to shelve their upcoming title, Bully? Surely the irony is not lost on all of us.

Now, I'll admit, I wish Rockstar would set aside their "badboy" attitudes and shelve this game for a while. Right now, the fire under video games is burning too hot, and the nonstop stream of bad press isn't really helping our cause. The whole industry seems to be suffering financially.

We need a breather. Just a little time to catch our collective breaths, and prepare for the next wave of anti-game sentiment.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely understand that Rockstar has every right to continue producing new games. I just think now might be the time to go in a slightly different "badboy" direction. I mean, there are still large portions of our country that have not fully gotten over Columbine, and Rockstar is putting out a game that follows the misadventures of a highschool Bully? I'm just not certain we're ready for that yet.

I honestly believe the envelope has been pushed far enough for now.
