Gaming News: "GRAW2 Confiscated"

Thursday March 22nd, José Reyes Baeza Terrazas, Governor of Chihuahua Mexico ordered that copies of Tom Clancy's Ghost Recon Advanced Warfighter 2 (GRAW2) be confiscated. Set in 2014, GRAW2 tells the story an advanced tactical team combatting Mexican Rebels in Juárez, Mexico, and El Paso, Texas. This news comes one month after Héctor Murguía Lardizábal, the mayor of Juárez, blasted GRAW2 contending that the game "instilled poor values and protrayed his town's people as violent".

When I read about the information gathering and ordered confiscations, my mind went immediately to that classic image of federal agents seizing Elián González. The idea of mexican federale's storming a house in similar fashion just to confiscate a game amused me.
Where I understand it on some level, the tendancy of various towns to get upset over these kinds of games just seems completely ridiculous to me. Considering that, in the last few years, a Las Vegas mayor, a Venezuelan legislator, and the North Korean goverment have all blasted game designers for using their city/country as the launching point of the actual site of combat related games, it might be time to consider using ficticious names and places. But, the problem as the designers (and I) see it, is that this screws up the emersion factor.
Personally, I'm all for it. I want to repel down the statue of liberty, or hole up in the Alamo to stem the tide of some well-funded militant group's aggression. It's a work of fiction just like novels, television shows, and movies. It's time for the uptight blowhards to give video games a break and remember that we're the largest growing entertainment industry on the planet. Sooner or later they'll stop whining and do the reasonable thing... ask for money.
