The Last of Us: "Understanding"

I don't know much about The Last of Us beyond it being a beautiful, ultra violent, Survival game by Naughty Dog, the creators of the Uncharted series. But I do know that it landed the Game Critics Award for Best of E3 2012. [more info]
I didn't know about this game at all until this morning when I read the article linked above. Then I went to watch some trailers on it, do some reading. And though the reason for the apocalypse is given to be some kind of "fungal pandemic", I'm not entirely convinced that it wasn't Joel, the game's primary character, that killed everyone.
The trailer I watched starts slowly enough with Joel and his companion, 14 year old Ellie, exploring a gorgeous game environment. Then you hear a couple of people talking. Then the entire world just goes to crap: choking, shooting, burning, stabbing. The only thing I didn't see were the flower headed infected that apparently roam the world outside of the quarantine zone. So I was left with a bit of a bad taste in my mouth. I may not ever play the game; it's just not my kind of game. But there's zero denying that it looks awesome.
Any of you heard of it/waiting for it?
