Gaming News: "Miyamoto's Philosophy"
Posted: Tuesday May 8th, 2007 by

On the heels of being voted one of Time Magazine's 100 most influential people, Nintendo's A-list game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, sat down for an interview with Entertainment Weekly. The interview is very basic and covers topics from what movies Miyamoto-san has watched recently to why he feels Twilight Princess is not doing well in Japan, and from what social issues he would consider putting in a game to whether he feels like an old man.

In the article Mr. Miyamoto also states plainly that he could make a game like Halo if he chose to; but, because he "always [tries] to create new experiences", he chooses to design games that people want rather than producing sequels and "frnchise extensions". And I believe him Miyamoto could probably make any game he wanted to and it would be good enough to be a success.

What I found most interesting, and a bit eyebrowlifting about the article though is Miyamoto's response to what social issues he would consider addressing via games. In a world were we worry about terrorism and corrupt politicians, he would consider making a socially concious game that addresses asshat kids on a train and people that don't pay taxes? I think he may have created one too many soft games and it's clouding his world vision. I don't consider that a downfall or character flaw though. I find it a bit refreshing.

Shigeru Miyamoto designs games that seem to focus on gameplay first, and everything else develops from there. I don't really need him to make a game that tackles unresolved global issues. When I sit down to play a game, I'm doing so to escape. I don't have much interest in being tossed right back into the pit of world awareness. Give me a stubborn gorilla throwing barrels at a carpenter, two mushroom eating brother plumbers trying to recue the kingdom's princess from an oversized, fire-breathing turtle, or a sword and shield-weilding juvenile elf trying to save the kingdom's princess from an evil porcine overlord... anyday.
