Woody & Ted: "The Magazine? Really?"
Posted: Thursday August 20th, 2009 by

Blizzard is teaming with Future (publishers of Maximum PC, The Official XBox Magazine, The Official Playstation Magazine, Nintendo Power, etc) to publish a quarterly, ad-free, 140+ page magazine centered around World of Warcraft. The first issue is scheduled to drop sometime this fall but subscription services will be opened on the magazine's official website tomorrow. There will be a booth at BlizzCon where attendees can sign up/subscribe.

After yesterday, I'm not sure if people have the right view of my opinion of WoW. I may not be happy with everything in game. I really am afraid that Activision will drag Blizzard down. But World of Warcraft is, without question, my favorite MMO. And where I'd more than happily pour over the concept work behind WoW for hours on end, I'm one of those folks that's convinced that print media is circling the drain.

Ted's animosity may well be a bit more deep seeded. I don't think it's that he hates to read. Though I'll admit I can't remember the last time I saw him reading something printed in a tangible format.

For me, news extending from a virtual world is released at virtual speeds. Meaning, there was new WoW news/reviews/interviews/etc. released today, there will be more new WoW news/reviews/interviews/etc. released to tomorrow. How exactly is a magazine released quarterly going to compete with that? The "value added" aspects of it are going to have to be flashy enough to support Future's idea that people will buy WoWth'Mag as a "collectible coffee-table book". If it is, I'm sure I'll end up with a copy or three (again I'm all about concept artwork). But, it would take something incredibly special to actually get me to subscribe. I mean, I canceled my Maximum PC subscription and Taks calls that my "porn".

So what are your thoughts? Interested? What would you like to see in it?

Sorry the comic was so late. No excuses, just me being lazy.
